Is BRC a Quality or Safety System?
British Retail Consortium, BRC, is a standard developed in the United Kingdom to standardize quality, safety, and legal requirements in all the levels of all organizations participating in the Supply Chain. Compared to ISO22000, this standard has a higher complexity level due to additional pre requirements known as PPR, design and manufacturing requirements from ISO9001, and legal requirements that each unique product has.
Therefore, BRC is a Quality and Safety Management System and it applies to any organization of the Food Supply Chain. It doesn’t discriminate about a company´s size. In the United Kingdom, 90% of producers and suppliers are certified on BRC.
